Computer Science and Engineering Department Seminar Guest Speaker: Ken Rice of Optivus Proton Therapy Title: Sophisticated technology used to develop proton therapy products Date: April 11th 2008 Time: 11-12noon Place: JBH391/389 Abstract Optivus Proton Therapy is a local company (Inland Empire) that produces proton therapy products used for treating cancer and other benign conditions. Sophisticated hardware and software technology is used to create and control a beam of protons that are directed to tumors within patients at sub-millimeter accuracy. Other systems are developed to ensure the radiation dose is delivered as prescribed and patient and personnel safety is maintained at all times. System design ranges from circuit board design and board level software applications to robotic patient positioners and complex host level applications. Disciplined engineering methodologies are used to develop the products to ensure product requirements, performance and high safety standards are achieved. An introduction to proton therapy will be discussed and several complex problems will be presented and how our team at Optivus resolves these problems with novel solutions.
