This is especially useful for biological images when used with the feature extraction methods developed by the UCSB vision research lab. The current methods used for similarity searches on the Cortina search engine can be made faster by indexing the collection of images in an R-tree and by running the search over a distributed system. 10:30 - 11:00 am, STEPHANIE PEREZ TITLE - Development of Tools to Study Microtubule Dynamics ABSTRACT Many novel drugs being developed to manipulate the dynamicity of microtubules require large populations of microtubules to be studied and their dynamic behavior to be analyzed. There is a strong need for automatic tools that are able to: track microtubules, calculate changes in length vs. time and analyzed changes in microtubule dynamics. However, to assure that the automatic tools are accepted, ground truths must be created to validate the tools results. 11:00 - 11:30 am, ZONGQI (RITCHIE) CAI TITLE - Querying Significant Patterns from Bisquik Image Database ABSTRACT Images have become an extremely important dataset in many areas of science including biology, geography and astronomy due to their ability to reveal spatial information not immediately available from other data sources. The QUIP (Querying Image Patterns) algorithm was introduced to retrieve significant spatial patterns from a large collection of such images.
