The following is from my .netrc file (replace PASSWORD with your full email adress): machine explorer.arc.nasa.gov login anonymous password PASSWORD macdef init binary hash cd /pub/Weather/gms/vis/gif Whenever you say 'ftp explore.arc.nasa.gov' you'll automatically get logged in, have the mode set to binary, hash feedback will be turned on, and you'll be put into the appropriate (visibile light) directory. The files are in GIF (Graphic Image Format) and are named .vis.gif The file '9309240000.vis.gif' denotes the visible light GIF image of Earth taken at midnight (0000) on 93/09/24. The images are 2199x2199 pixels by 16 shades of grey. You'll notice that the files are compressed, and the sizes vary quite a bit. WARNING: the small images are 'nightside' images - you can get quite a bit of compression on an all-black picture! I'm serious. So pull down the largest one you can find.
