On the one hand, I would like it if C&S and their ilk never again grace us with their presense, and life goes on. On the other hand, this Green Card incident can serve as a decisive event over the future of commercial venues on the Net. The silver lining in this affair is that the massive spamming galvanized an incredible (often misguided and vengeful) effort on behalf of the Usenet community towards dealing with the ever-looming Net advertising that threatens our sanctity and sanity. In these days of Info-Super-etc. hype and salivating net.wolves, these issues are receiving the attention they deserve. However, all this momentum might get lost in the ongoing noise that is current events, and in a perverse sort of way I'm kind of hoping that Cybersell does release another foolish and potentially crippling mass-posting. I'm sure there are many out there who would love a chance to unleash their clever retalitory scripts and mail-bombs, and C&S are by any measure the perfect villian. Perhaps like small scale forest-fires that clear dead branches and prune the area, such an event might actually do everyone some good in the long run. The best we can hope for is that all potential advertisers reflect on the Green Card incident and vow to treat Usenet like an angry porcupine. The worst that can happen is C&S-types bulldoze along and actually do turn a profit, 'validating' their idea that Usenet advertising is the way to go. Right now we're in a state of limbo, cautiously making plans for either outcome, and dreaming up new means of punishment towards the dreaded Cybersell. It leaves one tingling with antici... -pation. -- rbotting@wiley.csusb.edu. rbotting::=`Dr. Richard J.
